Large medical centers and the EMR

The EMR has been a point of discussion for almost 30 years. For good or for ill it has become a reality for many large medical centers because of positive and negative reinforcement from the federal government. $ is available to defer the cost to build the infrastructure and in the future government compensation for medical services will be tied to the status of an institutions EMR systems. Whether this is a good thing is a matter of view point. More in future posts. Tell us what you think.

Active EMR

What if the EMR could be more than a passive source of information ?

What if the EMR was active and could propose actions, for example, act as patient advocate for patients who do not have an informed advocate of their own ?

EMR: Does it make a difference ?

Are there any success stories ?
What is success ?
1) Better and more timerly patience medical information.
2) Patient controls access
3) Saves money: any studies that prove this ?

Electronic Medical Record: issues to address

The EMR ( electronic medical record ) will be a step forward in improving accuracy, timelyness, shareability, and effectiveness of the healthcare system.  That said,

how good must the privacy characteristics of these systems be
who is liable when something goes wrong and it will
how control who can change record
how do we reassure the patient
who else cares besides the patient
what will be the authentication method(s)
what are the ethical and socialogical considerations
standards, do they exist already and how require their use
compliance, how accomplish

The task is daunting but never in the last 30 years have the political stars lined up so well.

The Electronic Medical Record

After 25 years of promise the EMR ( electronic medical record ) is closer than ever.  The world wide financial crisis has establish an environment for significant change in how medical care is delivered and paid for.  Of particular interest is how medical information is saved, formated, stored, shared, and protected.  The paperless medical record ?  Is it time ?
